The U.S. Department of State plans to impose visa restrictions on Nigerian politicians responsible for sabotaging the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The U.S. Department did not specify the individuals or the numbers of people affected by the visa restrictions.
President Muhammadu Buhari won the 2019 presidential election to continue with a second term in office in an election tainted by violence, vote buying, delays and logistical glitches.
“These individuals have operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights,” spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.
“This visa ban is directed to certain election riggers not to the Nigerian people or the newly elected government,” Ortagus added.
